MIG/MAG welding torch
When preparing to purchase a semi-automatic welder, special attention should be given to choosing the right MIG/MAG welding torch. When selecting the right torch, you should primarily match it with the power of the MIG/MAG welder.
Most Popular MIG/MAG Welding Torches
The most popular in the Polish market are the MB series torches from AbicorBinzel, for which spare parts are readily available. There are two main types of MIG/MAG torches—air-cooled or liquid-cooled. Among the air-cooled torches, the most common and recognizable are the MB15, MB25, and MB36. They differ in the power of the device they can be used with: MB15 is recommended for a maximum current of around 180A. MB25 handles up to 250A, and MB36 is for a maximum current of 350A. a less popular than the aforementioned series. If you choose a MIG welder with a cooler and are welding with high currents, you'll need an appropriate MIG torch—such as the MB501 series, which is liquid-cooled and can handle a duty cycle of 100% at currents ranging from 500A to 550A. All MIG/MAG welding torches are available in three lengths: 3m, 4m, or 5m.
What to Consider When Choosing a MIG/MAG Welding Torch?
If you have chosen a semi-automatic welder and matched it with the appropriate torch, pay attention to several details often overlooked during purchase. The most crucial aspect is checking the power cable. It should be flexible and elastic, which significantly impacts work comfort and maneuverability. Some torches have stiff cables, which may indicate low-quality protective material or a small copper cross-section (more rubber than copper in the cable). Another important factor is an ergonomic handle mounted on a ball joint. This feature ensures a stable grip and ease of operation. Lastly, check the euro connector, which should be made of 100% brass. It's common to encounter torches where the connector nut is made of plastic. This can lead to rapid overheating of the connection, which may result in damage. It is also worth noting that the connector should have movable pins to prevent them from breaking.
